Jean Duff Sanford is born

HelenJeanne, was actually born, Jean Duff on Oct. 16th, 1919 in Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, (Allegheny County), PA. Due to complications, she was delivered caesarian section, and was the last of the Sanford children.

Jeanne was named "Jean Duff" after the wife of a family friend and lawyer from Carnegie, PA, James H. Duff (of Duff, Scott and Smith).

Jean and James Duff had lost their only child in 1910 and the Sanfords, who were close friends, wanted to honor them in name. James went on to become Governor of Pennsylvania. Jean, who later changed the spelling to "Jeanne", went on to become notable in her career as well.
